Autumn Rush: Capturing a Stunning Blue Kitchen Before the Leaves Dropped

My latest project brought me to a stunning and bold kitchen in Rye designed by Mark Gillies with Mari Woods Kitchen/Bath/Home. This space featured a uniquely shaped center island with geometric angles, highlighting his talent for blending functionality with aesthetic appeal. The deep blue cabinetry contrasted strikingly with the bright white countertops, creating a bold yet elegant look.

The goal of the shoot was to highlight the details and creative layout of this kitchen. The geometric island stands as a centerpiece, drawing the eye and adding a unique element to the kitchen. The gentle sandy brown wood floors provide a warm contrast to the deep blue cabinets, tying the space together with a natural, inviting feel.

The biggest challenge we faced was shooting in November with winter fast approaching. We didn't want to lose the vibrant leaves on the trees visible through the windows, while also needing to coordinate with the homeowner's holiday schedule. When I first scouted the house, it was filled with Halloween and fall decorations. Wanting the photos to be timeless, we knew we'd have to wait until after Halloween to remove the decorations.

My approach to lighting was crucial to capturing the kitchen’s design. I used my lights to bring up the shadows in the dark cabinets, highlighting edges to create shape and showcase the craftsmanship of the woodworking. Consistent color was also key, as the green from the trees outside wanted to shift the colors inside, which I knew would be unacceptable.

This project was a wonderful opportunity to showcase Mark’s design skills and the kitchen's unique blend of boldness and elegance.
