A Fresh Start in Portsmouth

Moving to Portsmouth marked a significant transition in my life, both personally and professionally. After being away from photography for a while, I was looking to reset my style and technique. In Pasadena, my work was bright and colorful, reflecting the vibrant environment I was surrounded by. But with this new chapter, I wanted to develop an aesthetic that was more subtle and sophisticated, capable of expressing deeper emotions. Black and white seemed like the perfect way to wipe the slate clean and start anew.

One of my favorite shots is of Market Square at dawn. The quiet streets, the early morning light, and the historic buildings all contribute to a sense of serene beauty and timelessness. Another photo that stands out is of the Music Hall, where the intricate details of the façade are accentuated in black and white, creating a striking image that highlights its architectural beauty. The calm waters of the harbor with the boats gently floating provide another favorite scene, encapsulating the peaceful yet vibrant maritime heritage of Portsmouth.

Photographing Portsmouth allows me to see the city in ways I might not have noticed otherwise. It pushes me to explore different neighborhoods, discover hidden gems, and appreciate the unique character of each place. This process of discovery and documentation not only deepens my understanding of the city but also strengthens my connection to it. Each photograph tells a story, capturing a moment in time and preserving it for the future, much like my own journey of settling into a new home and career.

Launching a second photography career in Portsmouth is both exciting and daunting. The city’s beauty and charm offer endless inspiration, and the supportive community makes it a wonderful place to grow as an artist. There’s a sense of starting anew, of rediscovering my passion for photography in a fresh and invigorating environment. It’s a chance to build on my past experiences while embracing the opportunities and challenges that come with a new setting. This journey feels like a blend of nostalgia and optimism, where each click of the shutter brings me closer to becoming part of the Portsmouth story.

I hope to create a body of work that not only showcases the beauty of Portsmouth but also reflects my personal journey and artistic growth. Through this series, I aim to capture the essence of the city—the places, the people, and the moments that define it. I want my photographs to evoke emotions, spark memories, and inspire others to see Portsmouth through a different lens. Ultimately, I hope this work will open new doors for collaborations, exhibitions, and opportunities to connect with the community and fellow artists.
